Can You Sea the SS Palo Alto

Can You Sea the SS Palo Alto

April 06, 2020

There is just something so majestic about the sea. From the waves that curl in and out of shore to the animals that inhabit the water, there is so much beauty and mystery surrounding its every move. One of our favorite places to visit is the SS Palo Alto — quite like the sea this once-powerful tank will conjure up a sense of grandeur when you see it for the very first time. The SS Palo Alto was built during World War I out of concrete because of a steel and iron shortage towards the end of the war. Although the SS Palo Alto was built as a tanker for the war, she was not finished before the war ended. She shuffled through serval jobs and titles before landing here in Santa Cruz at Seacliff State Beach Park. She now serves as an ecological habitat for marine life and shorebird populations in the area. The SS Palo Alto was slightly flipped over during the winter in 2017 but is still a great spot to marvel and birdwatch during your stay in Santa Cruz.
